Just a note, since I have had small newspapers for over 35 years I used to use them to promote activities and promoted travel fun and tourism and made a buck doing it.
I also owned several low power TV stations that helped from time to time.
Surprisingly, (you never would have thought of this) we used to run a "party on a Bus" trips and tours. As I recall some of the most interesting ones were 18 hour Las Vegas party on a bus trips to and back from Vegas (Phoenix) Six hours up, Six hours in Vegas and Six hours party on the bus coming back. (Headed back at 1 am Sunday morning,) One flat low rate, no overnight stay and a big time with other folks up and back. The Vegas part was okay too. I leased the bus and always sold out and if we had not sold out I would have canceled the trip.
We had Sunday afternoon "party on a bus," we went six surprise places, recall one stop was we went out to a sail plane port, drew numbers and two people got to go up the rest watched, plus five other places around the area. We went a lot of interesting places in range for the Sunday afternoon. I just contracted for the bus, and sold tickets.
Those mystery trips no one knew in advance were we were going and most did not care. It was just a fun afternoon with other single folks.
This was singles folks who mainly went because it was a good place to meet and mix with other like singles. You might promote specialized interest groups.
One Sunday we had a bar hopping party on a bus where we went to six different interesting ethnic bars for 30 min exactly each. We arranged for the bars to offer a free drink at each bar and they made up for it on additional drink sales on a slow time in the bar business. Sometimes we had two buses. Even the non drinkers had a great time dancing up a storm etc.
This is all for ideas. You do not need a bus, you need not take a risk, if you don’t sell out you cancel the trip and owe the bus company nothing. If you sell out the bus payment is easy. We often served things on the bus like Sunday afternoons I recall watermelons etc.
You might tie in with a radio or TV station that promotes it and gets customers for you and you give them a percentage. Again if they do not sell it out they get nothing. They have unused air time and if they publicize it and even if it does not go off you get lots of free publicity for your name and services.
If it does succeed they get income where there was no income before.
You can do this with ship cruises, bus trips, air charter flights, you name it, you become a tour operator and you do it all with paper. No money. On cruise ships you get say a 40% discount plus a free ticket for your wife and yourself and more if large groups if you have other big local names that travel free with you as part of the attraction.
