Have no experience in this business but have been an astonished customer.
Will tell you about it and your figure out how to do it in your locality. Most of the time I live in Arizona so I see little ads that say replace your windshield $100 in your garage. That’s half or a third of other quotes I get and I have to take it in. Sure enough I give him the make and model of my car and he shows up, replaces my windshield in a short period of time in my driveway and charges me $100.
Read up on this and the windshield replacement business is high margin. The glass companies replacing windshields charge the insurance companies big fees
and are offering on the radio, ten free Steak Dinners at El Swanko steak house
(Well known place getting lots of free radio ads) with our windshield replacements. Since your insurance company is paying for it anyway, (several hundred dollars) you go for that.
Most of the business for this guy comes from people with older cars that likely do not carry comprehensive. (Glass coverage) and just carry liability. Would assume he can do 5 or 6 of these a day and I understand most windshields wholesale are $50.
Also you can buy these mystery devices that squeeze epoxy into stone breaks and get good at doing these. Most charge $35
and you can make money coming out and do it at $25 in their garage or driveway.
You have no rent to pay, or other overhead the others have and the customer likes you coming out and take care of it. Maybe you could even charge more since you come out. You will have to learn the business.
Charge say $8 additional for second stone damage etc. and offer to do a new windshield if too many.
You have to work this out, I have not, and that is how to get set up to buy these at wholesale. Maybe you have some friend that runs an automotive shop that can steer you locally correctly. Call yourself Carl’s Windshield Repair and have a business card. You will eventually get it set up so you can go in and pick up today’s windshields with your van or pick up, turning in the model numbers and getting the match.
You will be able to read up on and gain experience changing windows. Maybe you will bust a windshield or two learning how. There are certainly instructions around on how to do windshield replacements.
If you do bust one, replace it, charge that $50 up to education. Likely you won’t, but here is how I learned to run an offset printing press.
This was about 50 years ago when offset presses were expensive and big stuff. I could not afford one but I heard of a big city (500 miles away city) operator that had a semi worn out one for sale cheap.
I bought it as is and had no idea how to run it but got all the inks and solutions etc needed and bought 3 cases of paper.
No competitor in my town who were the only ones that knew how to run an offset press were going to tell me squat so the 3 cases of paper I expensed as cost of my education and training on running an offset press.
Took me two days and used (ruined) all three cases of paper (expensive) before I got my first page off the press correctly.
Had paper up to my knees filling the whole room, paper everywhere and finally one copy right. Turns out the press being worn out made it extremely difficult for anyone to run but I did know that and mastered it, in its worn out condition. There was a fine line between solution and ink levels in the right rollers etc.
Anyway, you have to learn how to do some of these things the hard way. I am sure you will be putting windshields in short order after that first day. Maybe you have friends you can learn on if he pays the $50. Since I do not have the time to dig out all the details, you do it, seems few hand tools needed.
Advertise, New Windshields Installed $100.
Installed your place. 333- 5566 BobsAzGlass.com
This price is for illustration purposes only you set your own, find your own costs etc.
I would do them at a price that blows others out of the water until I was too busy, then I would raise my price. Remember, you have no rental, no overhead like the others. One pick up at wholesalers every day or two. in cold country in winter I would advertise in your garage and bring along a propane heater.
You will learn the limitations, maybe you need a winter business and this is a good summer business.
