One of the first things you want to do is getting signed up IMMEDIATELY for unemployment. Do not dilly dally around while you decide if you really want to file because you think you are likely to find a new job right away.
You do not know that....and as back up, do this immediately, because there is like a three week delay before you start getting checks. Any week you were not filed for is gone. (Money you may need later, now gone forever).
Unfortunately the number of personnel in the "unemployment office" is tied to the unemployment rate and it is up considerably, but new people to help keep up are not yet in place, so waits can be long.
However, (this is where information we supply you, is going to save you a lot of time) most states, you can file online.
simply logged onto your states Department of Labor Web site and began the process of applying for benefits, You can do the filing of the initial claim for benefits and certifying (- a weekly check-in process you must do with the department -) can both be completed online, any time of the night or day.
This weekly certifying process, (during which time you are receiving benefits you are simply verify whether you are still unemployed, or if you have worked during that week),
Your states labor department may periodically require proof that you have actively been seeking work. You may receive in the mail a form asking for the names and contact information for companies you have applied for positions with, so you may want to make it a habit to write these down as you go.
Your immediate job is to get filed an application that provides the required information: your- identity, employment and wage history, tax information. Then you start the wait. Remember it only starts after you get it filed...not when you decide you need to get it filed. So DO it right now.
Next is the health insurance, the expensive item that you are going to have to make a decision 59 days after your termination date. You will likely be able to elect to either receive these unemployment benefits via direct deposit to your bank account or on a debit card.
Remember this is Not Enough to Live On," But can make a big difference.
(Particularly if your spouse should get laid off also)
Even if you lower you’rer operating costs, and pick up extra part time income, remember, these benefits are pared down for each day of part-time work you perform and receive income for.
Exactly how much you will receive in benefits is determined by what you were earning for the four quarters prior to your becoming unemployed.
"It's based on what you were earning when last employed," it has nothing to do with your financial needs.
Another big consideration we will be taking up in our newsletters is your health insurance.
We just want to call to your attention here the importance of COBRA insurance, which allows employees to continue for a period on their former employer's health insurance plan. Look into this and we will be updating you on this in our newsletters.
